Bill Bailey - Qualmpeddler - This Guy Is Clever
Tonight I went and saw Bill Bailey in Qualmpeddler at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington. The company was great and Bill Bailey was amazing. The one issue I have with comedians is that some show up and tell a bunch of crude jokes to get laughs at the expense of others. Bill Bailey largely avoided that and even got plenty of crowd participation from plenty of Englishmen in the crowd who yell out more than New Zealanders do. We are too conservative! He even went with whatever the crowd yelled out, even if he only heard part of what they said. He is very smart and knows plenty of languages. I expected more music from him, but he played really random instruments and I loved when he played the horns. He is a gifted musician and has the intellect and ability to ad lib when needed.
It was a bit strange having so many Poms at this yelling things out and the only thing that hacks me off about people at comedy shows is when the comedian whether it is Rhys Darby, Flight of the Conchords or Bill Bailey is standing on stage doing nothing and some people in the audience can't stop laughing or laugh excessively at nothing. I don't mind people laughing at the routine or jokes, but when they are laughing at the mere sight of the performer on stage then I find that painful. It was also difficult to know when this show ended. It was like Bailey wanted to feel the love several times before finally finishing. He probably loved the applause.
I recommend going to Bill Bailey. The audience was more of a thirties plus crowd with plenty of Poms. What did you think of the show? I have to say that there are so many awesome British comedians who are so superior to most of New Zealand's talent.
For the record I had never been to see Bill Bailey before or really watched many episodes of Black Books.
